Battle success for Barnsley Band
14/04/2008
One of Barnsley\'s most popular bands tasted success last Thursday in the first round of the South Yorkshire Battle of the Bands.
Barnsley boys \"The Jives\" used their home advantage at the Barnsley venue Lucorum, playing an energetic and accomplished set to see off the Rotherham based bands \"Affliction\" and \"DiscoKiss\". The Battle of the bands judges praised The Jives professionalism, songwriting skills and overall level of presentation in awarding them a place in the first Semi-Final which will be held on May 15th.
The Battle of the Bands, which runs at Lucorum in Barnsley town centre for the next 7 weeks is a charity fundraising event organised by the venue\'s new owners in conjunction with the University Centre Barnsley and Rotherham based children\'s charity SAFE@LAST. Speaking for the charity this week, Fundraising Manager Mark Lees said \"We were all incredibly impressed with the standard of the bands on Thursday night, they all played superb sets but, at the end of the day, the sheer quality of \"The Jives\" gave them the upper hand.
We\'re extremely grateful to all the bands and their fans who came to the first heat and we hope to welcome many more to the heats over the next few weeks. As a small, local charity, we rely heavily on events like this to raise our funds and our profile.\" In the coming weeks the heats will feature top quality bands from as far afield as Nottingham and Bradford alongside favourites from Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield.
